The essential equipment for riding a motorcycle safely

Motorcycle-specific gloves

Since November 20, 2016, wearing approved gloves (CE marked) is mandatory for the rider and passenger of a motorcycle. The gloves must cover the entire hand and wrist and be suitable for motorcycle riding. They are essential for protecting the hands in case of a fall and from weather variations.

The different types of gloves

The high-visibility vest: a requirement for certain motorcyclists

The high-visibility vest is a reflective piece of equipment that allows the motorcyclist to be seen better at night or in the rain. While it is not mandatory to wear it while riding, it must be present on the vehicle and accessible without getting off the two-wheeler since January 1, 2016. However, it becomes mandatory as soon as they need to make an emergency stop or in case of a breakdown. This also applies to passengers. The vest must comply with standard EN 1150 for minors and EN ISO 20471 for adults.

Sanctions for the absence of a vest

In the absence of a high-visibility vest on the vehicle, the rider risks:

1. A fine of 11 euros (first-class offense)

For offenders not wearing the vest during an emergency stop or breakdown:

1. A fine of 135 euros (fourth-class offense)
2. The withdrawal of two points from the license
