The essential equipment for riding a motorcycle safely

Riding a motorcycle requires a minimum of equipment to ensure the safety of the rider and passengers. In France, the Highway Code provides for several types of mandatory equipment for motorcyclists. In this article, we present these pieces of equipment as well as the legal implications in case of non-compliance with these obligations.
The helmet: a must-have for motorcyclists
Wearing a helmet is the number one piece of equipment for motorcyclist safety. According to article R431-1 of the Highway Code, it is mandatory to wear an approved helmet for both the rider and passengers. The helmet must comply with French or European standards (NF or ECE 22-05).
The different types of helmets
There are several types of helmets adapted for different uses:
- The full-face helmet: it covers the entire head and has a protective visor. It is the helmet that offers the most protection against impacts and weather elements. It is particularly suitable for long trips or high-speed riding.
- The jet helmet: less protective than the full-face helmet, it leaves the face exposed but also has a visor. This type of helmet is more suitable for urban trips and in clear weather.
- The modular helmet: it combines the advantages of the full-face helmet and the jet helmet. The lower part can be raised to uncover the face during a stop, for example. It is suitable for both short and long trips, depending on the weather conditions.
Sanctions for not wearing a helmet
Failing to wear a helmet or wearing a non-approved helmet exposes one to:
- A fine of 135 euros for both the rider and the passenger
- The immobilization of the vehicle until regularization
- The suspension of the driving license for a period of up to 3 months
Motorcycle-specific gloves
Since November 20, 2016, wearing approved gloves (CE marked) is mandatory for the rider and passenger of a motorcycle. The gloves must cover the entire hand and wrist and be suitable for motorcycle riding. They are essential for protecting the hands in case of a fall and from weather variations.
The different types of gloves
There are several categories of gloves based on their material and level of protection:
- Leather gloves: they offer excellent abrasion resistance but are less waterproof than textile gloves.
- Textile gloves: they are generally lighter and more breathable, often equipped with waterproof membranes. However, they provide less protection than leather gloves in case of a fall.
- Mid-season or winter gloves: designed to be worn in cold weather, these gloves are essential if you ride in winter. They have reinforced thermal insulation and are generally very waterproof.
Sanctions for not wearing gloves
Without approved gloves, the rider and passenger face the following sanctions:
- A fine of 68 euros (reduced to 45 euros for quick payment)
- The withdrawal of one point from the driving license
The high-visibility vest: a requirement for certain motorcyclists
The high-visibility vest is a reflective piece of equipment that allows the motorcyclist to be seen better at night or in the rain. While it is not mandatory to wear it while riding, it must be present on the vehicle and accessible without getting off the two-wheeler since January 1, 2016. However, it becomes mandatory as soon as they need to make an emergency stop or in case of a breakdown. This also applies to passengers. The vest must comply with standard EN 1150 for minors and EN ISO 20471 for adults.
Sanctions for the absence of a vest
In the absence of a high-visibility vest on the vehicle, the rider risks:
- A fine of 11 euros (first-class offense)
For offenders not wearing the vest during an emergency stop or breakdown:
- A fine of 135 euros (fourth-class offense)
- The withdrawal of two points from the license
Having the appropriate equipment and following the rules is crucial to ensure the safety of motorcyclists and passengers. Knowing the legal obligations regarding equipment can help you avoid unnecessary penalties and ensure a more pleasant and reassuring riding experience. Do not hesitate to keep yourself informed regularly about any possible changes in regulations to always remain compliant with the law.
